Escape from the Jungle
1) ____ It was Christmas of 1971. A film director, whose name was Werner Herzog, was at the airport in Peru. He needed to take a plane into the jungle, but the flight was full and the plane took off from the airport without Herzog. A few minutes later the plane crashed into the jungle. Only one girl was alive. She was from Germany and her name was Julianne. The other 96 people on the plane all died in the accident.
2) ____ When the plane crashed, Julianne fell through the trees and landed on the ground. She woke up 24 hours later. Her head and her arm hurt, but she was alive. She knew that she needed to get out of the jungle. Julianne didn’t have the right clothes for a journey like this – she had a miniskirt and a T-shirt on – but she knew a lot about the jungle. Her parents were scientists who studied the jungle in Peru, and the jungle was Julianne’s home when she was a young child. So she knew that the important thing was to find fresh water.
3) ____ When she found water, she followed it and soon came to a river. She knew that there were often villages near a river. But it wasn’t an easy journey for her. She walked for ten days without food. She often had to swim through dangerous water, full of crocodiles. People flew over in small planes to look for those who might be alive after the accident.
4) ____ After ten days, it was decided that everybody had died, so they stopped looking for people. Two days later, Julianne walked out of the jungle, very hungry and tired, but alive! Fifteen years later, Werner Herzog went back to Peru and made a film about Julianne’s amazing journey.
