During употребляется с определенными временными периодами: winter, vacation, holidays и др., часто за ним следует артикль the, местоимения this, that, these, those: During the summer.
For используется с периодами времени, конкретными по длительности, но неопределенными по времени. Употребляется с существительным в единственном числе с неопределенным артиклем, с существительным во множественном числе, а также с прилагательным, обозначающим количество: for a long time (в течение долгого времени), for a year (в течение года), for six days (в течение 6 дней), for ever (навсегда).
During и for могут употребляться перед местоимением the whole, но не употребляются перед местоимением all :
He worked for / during the whole day. Но : He worked all day.
For употребляется при указании на период времени. Since употребляется при указании на точку отсчета всегда с Present Perfect :
I haven’t seen him since six o’clock.
Beside означает у , возле , около , рядом : Come and sit down beside me.
Besides означает кроме , помимо :
There were many other famous people besides Mr. Reed.
Between соответствует русскому предлогу между и употребляется, когда речь идет о двух предметах или лицах:
A new agreement was signed between the two countries.
Among означает среди и употребляется, когда речь идет о нескольких предметах или лицах:
The cat is among the pillows.
