The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island (until 1956 Bedlou Island), about 3 km southwest of the Southern District in Manhattan, one of the districts of New York.

The goddess of liberty holds the torch in her right hand and in the left hand she holds a side plate. The inscription on the label indicates «JULY IV MDCCLXXVI»(« 4 July 1776»), the date of signing of the Declaration of Independence. One leg of the "Freedom" stands on broken chains.

The pedestal of the statue was made of granite in the form of a star, designed by American architect Richard Morris Hunt.

In the crown of the statue there are 25 windows symbolizing earthly and heavenly gems, rays illuminate the world.

The seven rays on the crown of the statue represent the seven seas and seven continents, as considered in the western geographical tradition.

Since its opening, the statue served as a navigational reference point and used as a lighthouse.

In 1883, American poetess Emma Lazarus wrote the sonnet "The New Colossus», dedicated to the Statue of Liberty. 20 years later, in 1903 it was engraved on a bronze plate and attached to the wall of the museum, located in the pedestal of the statue. The famous last lines of "Freedom":

«Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!» cries she

With silent lips. «Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!»

The history of the Statue of Liberty and the island on which it stands – it’s a history of changes.

Presidential Decree of 15 October 1924 Fort Wood (and the statue in its territory) was declared a national monument, whose boundaries coincide with the boundaries of the fort.

Statue is 47 meters tall, and adding a pedestal on which it is installed, we have a huge building about 93 meters.

National Monument of America is considered the Statue of Liberty in 1924, but the island where it rises is known as the "island of freedom" only in 1956.
