WRITING A RESUME
What is the purpose of a resume?
A resume is a brief summary of your experience and background which highlights your strengths for the prospective employer.
The resume is for the employer, not for you. Your task is to present yourself on paper in a way that addresses the employer's needs.
What are the major elements should include?
There are some basic areas of information that most resumes include:
Contaсt Information Experience
Professional Objective Special Interests/Skills
Educational Background References
Contact Information.
Be sure to include your name, full address, and telephone number so the employer knows where to reach you.
Professional Objective,
If you choose to include a job objective on your resume, it should include some combination of the following:
a) The type of position you are seeking
b) The type of industry/organization where you wish to work.
c) The type of skills you wish to contribute to your work.
Education Background,
The employer will be looking for indication of your degree and its relevance to the position, your academic standing, and honors achieved.
Experience,
For each experience, include your job title, your place of employment (with city and state), dates of employment, and description of the position which demonstrates your major selling points.
Special Interests/Skills,
A skills or interests category can add individuality to your resume. Foreign languages and specific computer knowledge will enhance your candidacy for most positions.
What about Presentation and Layout?
An employer will review a resume for less than one minute. Therefore:
1. Stick to one page if it is possible.
2. Use techniques such as underlining, italicizing, CAPITALIZING, boldface type, s-p-a-c-i-n-g
3. Use your white space widely. Balanced margins, adequate white space in the body of the resume adds to its attractiveness and gives the employer space for notes and comments.
4. Major categories that present the strongest selling points should appear first
5. The resume must be letter perfect. No errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and typing.
