Childhood is the safest period of human life.
Yaroslavl,
Russia

Dear Mary,
Thank you for your letter. It was great to hear from you again.
As for your questions, I think that the most horrible disasters are tornadoes and floods, because it’s very difficult for people to stay alive during them. Floods are typical disasters of my country, especially when the rainy season comes. Frankly speaking, many citizens just stay at home to protect themselves from flood, but our family prefers to move to a high point in the area for a while.
By the way, what is the name of your history teacher? How old is she? Is she kind with her students?
That’s all for now. Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Dasha
Childhood is the safest period of human life.
It is a common fact that at all times people have taken care of their safety. While some of them think that there is no safer period in human life than childhood, others think differently.
In my opinion, childhood is not the safest time of our lives. First of all, small kids do not understand what can be dangerous for their health, but they cannot stop exploring the world. There are many cases when children have suffered from playing with matches or electrical appliances because of their curiosity. Secondly, kids can be injured at any time because their bones are not yet strong enough and formed as an adult not fully developed. They often fall and cry because of lack of strength in muscles and bones.
However, many people think differently. They say that children are always under the control supervision of parents, who do everything for their health and safety. Mothers and fathers take care of their kids, so children do not have to worry about their health.
I cannot agree with the opponents’ opinion. I think that parents are not able to control their kids constantly so there are often dangerous situations for children's lives. For example, two years ago a small boy from Yaroslavl caught his hood on the playground and almost suffocated due to the inattention of his parents.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that childhood is not the safest period in human’s life. I have no doubt about it because despite some minor control from by parents, kids are always at risk.

Miss Simms took off her silk scarf, then removed her gloves and read the letter. Her face broke into a wide smile. “Why, Dotty, this is absolutely marvellous!” she exclaimed delightedly. “Well done. I’m so pleased you finally 35 ______ to find the courage to show your work to someone. Didn’t I always 36 ______ you it was good enough for publication?”
“But I didn’t show it to anyone,” Dotty answered. “At least not to this magazine. I let Anna’s mother read it and she must have sent it to them.”
“You mustn’t turn 37 ______ this offer,” Miss Simms responded. “You really must telephone them, Dotty. They obviously love your work – and who knows where this might lead? I have a friend who has been trying to get some of her work published for years, so I know how hard it is. I’m so proud 38 ______ you.”

A nice surprise Dotty called her friend’s mother Miranda, who was really pleased to hear her voice when she picked up the phone. 32 ______, Miranda was surprised to find out that Dotty wanted to talk to her, not her daughter. Somebody had sent Dotty’s stories to the magazine and the editors sent her a letter offering to publish her work. They asked her to telephone them and 33 ______ a meeting in London. Dotty was curious if that was Miranda who had sent her story to the magazine. She quickly explained to the woman what had happened. When the girl had finished, there was a silence for a moment before Miranda asked, “Are you very annoyed with me, Dotty? I know I shouldn’t have done that without your 34 ______, but you have such a talent for writing and I thought you should be recognised. I’m not 35 ______ all surprised that the magazine wants to publish you.” “No, I’m not annoyed. More shocked, I think,” Dotty admitted. “I’m not too sure about the trip to London though. To 36 ______ the truth, I’ve never ventured that far away on my own before.” “Oh, you’ll be absolutely fine,” Miranda said confidently. “But I could always come with you if you liked. I’m certainly not going to let you miss this opportunity. Look, why don’t you come here for tea after work tomorrow with Anna and we’ll discuss it then. But meantime 37 ______ sure you ring them first thing in the morning.” Dotty promised her that she would and went to bed 38 ______ by this surprise.

Two years in a hut Henry Thompson, a writer, built a hut on the shore of the pond and lived there all alone for two years. He did this for two reasons: because he wanted to 32 ______ that people spend too much time and money on food and clothes and because he wanted a perfectly quiet chance to write more books. 33 ______ to the writer, he spent only one hundred dollars a year while he lived in this hut. He raised beans on his land, ate wild berries, caught fish and “went visiting” his friends and neighbours now and then. To buy his woodsman’s clothes and a few necessities, he planted gardens, painted houses, and cut wood for his friends. This period influenced Henry’s creative work a lot. He wrote a book called “The Wood” which 34 ______ all about these seven or eight hundred days he lived in his hut. Several other books also describe the time when he 35 ______ to live all by himself. These sold very well. In all of them Henry was boasting that he had found the only sensible way to live. “I am for simple living, and I 36 ______ being alone!” he would declare in his books. He 37 ______ you feel, when you read his books, that it is fine to walk around the fields, sniffing the wild grape and the green grass, and that no one can find pleasure like the man who rows, and skates, and swims. 38 ______, people passing by the pond used to hear him whistling old ballads, or playing very softly and beautifully on a flute, and they thought he sounded lonely and sad.
