Antarctic expeditions then and now: 100 years of exploration

It has been over a century since polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous voyage on the Endurance. He and his crew were hoping to be the first explorers to cross the Antarctic, but when thick sea ice closed in around the ship, it was unable to move. At that time, Shackleton and his men were beginning a terrifying expedition into the unknown; nowadays tens of thousands of people come to the Antarctic every year.
Modern ships and equipment are far superior to the technology available to the early explorers. Today’s explorers have had a century to learn more about the environmental challenges. However, a lot has stayed the same. Travellers have always said there is an incredible sense of peace they feel there.
Shackleton used to camp on the ice in four- to eight-man tents. Modern tents are low to the ground to keep wind flowing over the top and allow heat to stay inside. The crew of the Endurance used to eat fish they caught from the sea. Nowadays, on expedition ships, passengers can enjoy meals prepared for them by a chef.
When Shackleton and his men reached Elephant Island, after sailing in a lifeboat from their damaged ship, they were exhausted. Today, health and safety conditions have improved. The ships’ technology can check weather conditions and find safe routes to travel.
