DRIVING OVER EUROPE
When driving to another country, remember that unawareness of this country's regulations is not a legal excuse. So, should you break the rules, there's no sense in looking for justification — you'll have to pay a fine anyhow. However, certain knowledge on chargeable fines is desirable. For example, an overspeed is fixed with radar and additionally confirmed with a photo. The photo is also important to prove the violation of crossing the street against the red light. Radars and cameras can be of two types: immovable and movable. The first are usually fixed on traffic lights and can be seen from a distance, and everyone knows about them. The second can be set up in a car having no police marking which is parked at the side of the road or somehow masked.
The penalty for overspeed depends upon the presence of injured, the place where the violation occurred (city, motorway, ordinary road, or "30km/h zone"), and the extent of speeding.
The speed is limited up to:
- 50km/h within an inhabited locality in all European countries, and 30km/h in some places where the corresponding road sign says "30km/h zone";
- 10km/h (5km/h - in some countries) within the residential community where the road sign says "Children on the road";
- 80-100km/h in uninhabited zone, depending on the country; and
- 120km/h on motorways of almost all European countries, particularly 130km/h in France, and no speed limits in Germany.
If you happen to be stopped by the police, you should let down the window and keep your hands on the wheel waiting for further orders. By no means should you get out of your car, unless a police officer asks you to do this! Otherwise, this can be presumed as aggression.
